Did you know that in 2024, Chattanooga’s 4th Floor Makerspace is celebrating 10 years
as one of the
only library-situated makerspaces in state of Tennessee?

In celebration of this, on Saturday, August 3rd, Chattanooga’s Downtown Library will be filled with four levels of fun for the entire family for the inaugural Maker Day! We recognize that when a Makerspace exists in a community, information, design, technology, and the arts are able to cross-pollinate freely in urban spaces contributing to a more creative, connected and engaged public. Attendees can enjoy an interactive exhibit of the 10 year history of the 4th Floor Makerspace; live demos, talks and workshops from today’s avid 4th Floor-made brands, businesses, artisans; and “2034: Chattanooga in the Making” to future-cast the next ten years of making with themed activity labs.

The corridor between Broad Street and 11th will come alive with life-size lawn games and buskers, while inside is a creative wonderland with something for everyone – cyanotypes, screenprinting, zine making, podcasting, button-making, map making and so much more! Typical library activities and 4th Floor equipment will still be available, but also host additional activities in celebration of Maker Day.

Impact Study // The “Why” Behind

Designing a
Maker Day Event

Makerspaces are all about making change. Making something out of upcycled materials. Making something move. Making some noise. Making an impact. Making new possibilities. But, most importantly, making community. Makerspaces often become community hubs that encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing, which can lead to more robust local networks of innovation. These spaces not only support entrepreneurs, brands and businesses but also facilitate partnerships with other stakeholders who use the space to encourage skills in creative strategy and design thinking for youth + adults.

Frequently Asked Questions

Maker Day 2024

How Do I Get There?

The event is hosted at the Downtown Library in order to increase public access. The branch is on several CARTA bus lines, on the CARTA Shuttle route, has a bike kiosk out front for those local and wanting to bike over. You can call the Chattanooga Public Library for support on directions beyond these.

Can I Volunteer?

The volunteer window has closed and we have all the hands we need for Maker Day, but thank you! Don’t let that be a bummer though. You can sign up for general volunteering at the Chattanooga Public Library anytime. Start that process here.

Where Do I Park? Is it Free?

There are several parking options around the Downtown Library! The meters surrounding the building are first-come, first-serve and $1.50 per hour. View full list of rates and garages via this link. The Union Square Garage is directly behind the library is privately owned, rates may vary. You can check all walkable parking lots and garages via this link.

How Much are Tickets?

There are no tickets needed for Maker Day! Thanks to generous sponsors, this event can be free to all who want to be there. The official afterparty, “Maker Mingle” is free for all of our event contributors (artists, sponsors, volunteer and staff) and everyone else is asked to purchase a ticket for $5 (plus Eventbrite fees) to help support the stipends and resources we’re providing to local artists.

Will There Be Food Onsite?

Fingers crossed! We are still in the final stages of planning and hope some of our invited friends from the infamous Food Truck Fridays will join us. If not, the closest food options are Jimmy John’s, Peet’s, Pickle Barrel, Food City on Broad St & Alimentari.

Can I Bring My Children?

Yes, bring your children and your inner child for some imaginative play time as we celebrating the history and future of “making” in Chattanooga. The official afterparty, “Maker Mingle”, is adult-only.
